JOSEPH GROODY WON HIS OWN TERM AS SHERIFF, DEFEATING RETIRED POTTSVILLE POLICE CHIEF DALE REPP BY ABOUT 500 VOTES. GROODY HAD BEEN APPOINTED TO THE JOB LAST YEAR. PEGGY ZIMMERMAN, REPUBLICAN CANDIDATE FOR JURY COMMISSIONER, DEFEATED EDWARD KLEHA OF MAHANOY CITY, THE DEMOCRAT, 59 PERCENT TO 41 PERCENT. DISTRICT JUDGES DAVID PLACHKO AND ANTHONY KILKER WERE UNOPPOSED.

HARRISBURG, PA. (AP) - FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 27 YEARS, HARRISBURG HAS A NEW MAYOR. DEMOCRAT LINDA THOMPSON, THE HARRISBURG CITY COUNCIL PRESIDENT, BEAT REPUBLICAN CHALLENGER NEVIN MINDLIN. SHE WILL BE THE FIRST BLACK FEMALE MAYOR IN HARRISBURG. THOMPSON WILL REPLACE LONGTIME MAYOR STEPHEN REED, WHOM SHE BEAT IN THE DEMOCRATIC PRIMARY.

(AP) - THE CITY OF YORK HAS ELECTED ITS FIRST BLACK MAYOR, FORTY YEARS AFTER VIOLENT RACE RIOTS IN THE CENTRAL PENNSYLVANIA TOWN LED TO THE DEATH OF A WHITE POLICE OFFICER AND A BLACK WOMAN.
