State News-Tuesday, Feb. 13th
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - A police official says the scene of a fatal shooting in Philadelphia was "utter chaos."
A gunman fatally shot three men at a business meeting before getting into a shootout with police and committing suicide. Another man was critically wounded. Two other men were found bound with duct tape but they weren't seriously hurt. This all happened at a business center in the old Philadelphia Navy Yard. It might have been an investment firm or a marketing company. Police say the gunman got into an argument about money with others at the board meeting.
HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) - A bipartisan panel resumes deliberations in Harrisburg today on proposals to change the way the state House of Representatives operates. The Speaker's Commission on Legislative Reform began adopting changes to the rules last week. It has endorsed restricting session hours to 8 a-m to 11 p-m and allowing representatives who move to suspend the rules to debate the merits of doing so, among other things. The full House is expected to consider rules changes the week of March 12th.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Philadelphia Eagles coach Andy Reid is taking a leave of absence from the team. Team president Joe Banner says Reid is going on leave to take care of personal business. At a news conference, Banner said Reid will be available for consultations as the Eagles prepare for the upcoming draft and free
agency. The leave will last until mid-March. Two of Reid's sons are in the midst of legal issues with the
police. Garrett Reid tested positive for heroin after he caused a traffic accident on January 30th. His brother Britt was arraigned on drug and weapons charges the same day.
HAVERFORD, Pa. (AP) - Haverford College has chosen a professor of medicine and pediatrics from the University of Pennsylvania as Haverford's 13th president. School officials say Stephen G. Emerson will take the reins on July first. He will replace Thomas Tritton, who led the school for the past decade. Tritton announced last year that he would step down this summer to pursue other opportunities. Emerson received his undergraduate degree from Haverford in 1974; his master's, doctorate and medical degrees come from Yale. Emerson spent time at Harvard Medical School and the University of Michigan before going to Penn in 1994. Haverford is a liberal arts college in suburban Philadelphia with about 11-hundred students.
