Senator Rick Santorum has lost his first political election. Pennsylvania State Treasurer Bob Casey defeated Santorum soundly for the junior Senator seat in the Commonwealth. In Schuylkill County, Casey received over 25-thousand-votes, compared to just over 21-thousand for Santorum. Governor Ed Rendell and Lieutenant Governor Catherine Baker Knoll won a second term, by defeating Lynn Swann and Jim Matthews. In the county, the margin of victory for Rendell was about 55-hundred votes. Tim Holden won re-election in the 17th Congressional District, defeating Matthew Wertz, who stopped campaigning in September by over 26-thousand-votes. Pennsylvanians approved the Persian Gulf Relief referendum overwhelmingly. The proposal would give bonuses to Gulf War Veterans who served during the 1990-1991 campaign in Kuwait.
