National and International News-Tuesday, Nov. 7th
WASHINGTON (AP) - Democrats are counting on voter discontent over Iraq and lawmaker ethics to help them wrest control of Congress today. All 435 House seats are up for grabs. Democrats need a gain of 15 to take majority control in the House. It's a tougher battle in the Senate, where six seats would do the trick.
WASHINGTON (AP) - Many voters today will cast ballots electronically for the first time. And the experts say glitches with new touch-screen machines are almost a given. One federal official acknowledges the machines "are basically computers" -- and anyone with a home computer knows what static electricity or lightning can do.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Bob Casey could become the first Pennsylvania Democrat elected to a full Senate term in more than 40 years. Incumbent Republican Rick Santorum spent yesterday touring small towns in a G-O-P stronghold arguing that a Democrat in office means fewer jobs, more jobless and higher taxes.
BEIT HANOUN, Gaza Strip (AP) - Hours after Israeli forces pulled back from a weeklong Gaza operation, another homemade rocket has been fired from Beit Hanoun (bayt ha-NOON'). Hamas officials meanwhile say Israeli tanks struck at the home of a Hamas lawmaker who helped militants escape from a Gaza mosque.
BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) - Two days after he was sentenced to hang, Saddam Hussein is back in court for his other trial stemming from the deaths of about 180-thousand Kurds. One man on the stand today says dozens of Kurdish men were promised amnesty, then lined up and executed by Saddam's soldiers.
