WASHINGTON (AP) - President Bush says he is confident that Republicans will maintain control of Congress in next week's elections. Bush told White House reporters that people are concerned about security and taxes. He will campaign today in Montana and Nevada, where Republicans are locked in tight races.

WASHINGTON (AP) - The Democratic Party's 2004 presidential nominee won't be stumping for fellow Democrats as campaign 2006 winds down. Senator John Kerry has apologized for remarks that many interpreted as insulting to U-S troops. Kerry also has canceled several appearances.

BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) - More than one-thousand Iraqis died from violence in October. That's the highest number since The Associated Press began tracking civilian deaths in April 2005. The true death toll most likely is higher, because many deaths go unreported.

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) - An account in a U-S Army journal paints a grim picture of the new Iraqi army. A U-S officer wrote that Iraqi soldiers being trained by American military advisers go on rampages and flee from dangerous situations.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - The track coach who sparked the sweeping probe of performance-enhancing drug use among elite athletes could be indicted as early as today. Two Justice Department officials say Trevor Graham faces charges of making false statements to authorities.
