WHITE HOUSE (AP) - After a bitterly fought campaign, it's time to bury the political hatchet in Washington. President Bush has lunch today with Nancy Pelosi, the Democrat in line to be speaker of the House. They're both looking for ways to move ahead. As Pelosi puts it, "Democrats are not about getting even."
RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - A squeaker win by a novice politician in Virginia has capped the Democrats' control of Congress. Jim Webb outpolled incumbent Republican George Allen by a little over seven thousand votes out of more than two and a-quarter (m) million cast. Allen could announce a decision today on a recount.
BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) - One Iraqi man says Donald Rumsfeld's resignation "shows the scale of the mess the U-S has made in Iraq." Many in Baghdad say they expect the U-S approach to change when Rumsfeld's expected replacement, Robert Gates, takes over as defense secretary.
HUNTSVILLE, Texas (AP) - Before getting a lethal injection last night, a convicted killer told the victim's relatives to "go home, have fun, smile." Texas executed Willie Shannon for the 1992 carjack slaying of a man in Houston. He insisted the fatal shooting was an accident.
CHICAGO (AP) - The soon-to-be ex-husband of pop princess Britney Spears made only passing reference to her last night at a show in Chicago. Rapper Kevin Federline asked the crowd, "You know who's about to be a free man?" The House of Blues gave away some tickets to his show because of lagging sales.
