St Georges Hearing

JUDGE CYRUS PALMER DOLBIN HAS RULED THAT THE DIOCESE OF ALLENTOWN CAN CONTINUE THE DEMOLITION OF THE HISTORIC ST GEORGES CHURCH IN SHENANDOAH. THE TWO AND A HALF HOUR HEARING IN THE SCHUYLKILL COUNTY COURTHOUSE WAS CALLED TO DETERMINE WHETHER MEMBERS OF THE CHURCH HAD ANY STANDING TO PURSUE TAKING OVER THE CHURCH BUILDING, WHICH WAS DETERMINED BY THE DIOCESE OF ALLENTOWN TO BE UNSAFE. THE DIOCESE HAS CONTENDED THAT IT WOULD COST MILLIONS TO REPAIR THE EDIFICE, WHICH WAS CLOSED IN 2006. PARISHONERS HAVE CONTINUED TO PRESS THEIR CASE THAT ST GEORGES HISTORICAL VALUE WAS WORTH SAVING. ONE UNANSWERED QUESTION REMAINS ABOUT MONIES DONATED TO ST GEORGES BUILDING FUND. THE COURT RULED THAT IT CANNOT DECIDE ISSUES OF CANON LAW.
