Local News-Monday, June 11th

A fire destroyed several buildings in Shenandoah yesterday morning. The blaze, which appears to have been intentionally set, started in a camper on Main Street and spread to garages beside the building, then the former post office and the Gibson Tire building. The Shenandoah Historical Society was also damaged from smoke and water and when a wall caved in. According to the Republican and Herald, the call came into before 4am. Nearly a dozen people were left homeless. An investigation will resume today into the apparent case of arson in Shenandoah.

State police at Schuylkill Haven responded to a domestic dispute early Sunday in Palo Alto. Reports indicate that Christian and Erika Mark were arguing at their Bacon Street home when the fight turned physical. Both will receive a summons on the harassment charges from the office of District Judge David Plachko.

A tractor-trailer caused a heap of trouble Friday morning. State police have finally released details of a tractor-trailer attempting to turn around in the 183 Plaza parking lot in Wayne Township. The rig, operated by Edward Stiles of Kempsville, Ontario, Canada, caught overhead telephone and TV cable wires, blocking Route 183. The mishap also knocked over a light post. A power outage disrupted service for several hours, and a large chunk of cable customers were without service until Friday evening.

A Harrisburg man was charged with DUI late Friday in Blythe Township. State police at Schuylkill Haven now say that Richard Shema was stopped along the Burma Road around 10pm, when troopers made a routine check . They determined that Shema had been drinking, when he was arrested for DUI. Charges are pending.

A Mahanoy City man avoided injury following a one vehicle crash on West Centre Street Sunday morning. Kyle Schaeffer, age 18, was headed east when he apparently fell asleep at the wheel. His vehicle crossed the street and hit a street light, knocking it over. The Republican and Herald reports that he avoided injury, but a PPL Electric crew was called in to take care of live wires that were knocked down. The crash happened around 7am.
