BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) - The United Nations says nearly 35-thousand civilians were killed last year in Iraq, almost three times as many as the Iraqi government had earlier estimated. The U-N says its numbers come from the government, Iraqi hospitals and other agencies.
RIYADH, Saudi Arabia (AP) - Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice continues her quest for Iraq support in the Sunni kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The Saudi foreign minister says he hopes President Bush's plan works but it's really up to the Iraqis stop the sectarian killing.
MADRID, Spain (AP) - A Cuban diplomat calls the latest dire report about Fidel Castro's health "another lie." A Spanish newspaper says the Cuban leader is in "grave" condition after three failed surgeries and complications from an intestinal infection. A Spanish surgeon flew to Cuba last month to treat Castro.
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) - Ice-coated tree limbs in the northeast snapped, electrical cables sagged and transformers popped, leaving 145-thousand customers without power in New York and New Hampshire.
The winter storm that also coated the Midwest in ice is blamed for at least 41 deaths.
BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) - The move adaptation of the stage hit "Dreamgirls" is the big winner at the Golden Globe Awards show with three. "Babel" won best drama. And in an interesting twist, Clint Eastwood's film "Letters From Iwo Jima" won the foreign language Globe. It was in Japanese.
