State news-Tuesday-August 1st
PITTSBURGH (AP) - A Senate committee is scheduled to hold a public hearing in Pittsburgh today on legislation to reduce the size of the Pennsylvania General Assembly. The bill would cut the size of the state House of Representatives from 203 to 121 and the size of the senate from 50 to 30. Adoption of the bill would require amending the state constitution. Testimony is expected from representatives of groups such as the Pennsylvania League of Women Voters of Greater Pittsburgh, the Allegheny Institute for Public Policy, the National Conference of State Legislatures and the N-A-A-C-P of Pittsburgh. The hearing on the bill sponsored by Republican Senator John Pippy will be held in the Lower Lounge of the William Pitt Student Union of the University of Pittsburgh from 9 a-m to noon.
READING, Pa. (AP) - A hawk seen flying around the Reading Country Club for about a month with an arrow in its leg is now onthe mend. The bird was snared on Saturday and a veterinarian removed the shaft. Doctor Kirsten Reis of Wright Veterinary Medical Center in Bethlehem Township says the female hawk's leg "looks great" and she is being treated with antibiotics and pain medication. Reis says the bird will be turned over to wildlife experts for rehabilitation and could be released back at the 134-acre golf course in about two weeks. Two falconers, Al Molchen of Orefield and Jim Spess of Upper Macungie Township, snared the hawk on Saturday, using a pet hamster as a lure. Morgan says the hamster wasn't harmed. Exeter Township Police are investigating the shooting.
