MIAMI (AP) - The streets of Miami's Little Havana neighborhood erupted in celebration as word spread that Cuban President Fidel Castro had temporarily relinquished power. Castro handed over control to his brother yesterday. The 79-year-old dictator is undergoing treatment for gastrointestinal bleeding.
JERUSALEM (AP) - Israel is expanding its ground offensive by sending troops deeper into Lebanon to clear out Hezbollah fighters.Israel says it wants to take the area near the Litani River which is just 18 miles from its border. Israel is also continuing its airstrikes against Hezbollah guerillas.
BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) - At least 44 people are dead in violence in Iraq today. Twenty Iraqi soldiers were killed when their bus blew up after being hit by a roadside bomb. Another 14 people died during a car bomb attack in an upscale Baghdad neighborhood.
UNDATED (AP) - Much of the Midwest is preparing for another day of sweltering heat. Temperatures are expected to rise into the upper 90s and in some places exceed 100 degrees. The heat is being blamed for several deaths and eastern cities could feel it today.People are being warned to keep cool and hydrated.
LOS ANGELES (AP) - The Los Angeles Police Department has opened a new investigation into the 1997 unsolved murder of rapper Notorious B.I.G. It comes in the wake of a wrongful death lawsuit filed by the rapper's mother who claims rogue police officers are responsible for the killing.
