A FORENSIC PATHOLOGIST IS INVESTIGATING THE SUSPICIOUS DEATH OF A POTTSVILLE WOMAN

FOUND IN HER APARTMENT. SCHUYLKILL COUNTY CORONER JOSEPH LIPSETT PRONOUNCED 45-YEAR-OLD RUTH GOLDEN, DEAD JUST AFTER ONE A.M. WEDNESDAY AT HER HOME AT 717 MAHANTONGO STREET. LIPSETT TELLS THE REPUBLICAN HERALD "THERE ARE NO WOUNDS. AND INVESTIGATORS ARE NOT SURE EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED. THE DEATH IS BEING LABELED SUSPICIOUS. AN AUTOPSY WAS CONDUCTED WEDNESDAY BY DOCTOR RICHARD BINDIE AT THE SCHUYLKILL MEDICAL CENTER-SOUTH JACKSON STREET, BUT A CAUSE OF DEATH WAS NOT YET DETERMINED AND TOXICOLOGY TESTS ARE PENDING. BINDIE EXPECTS AN ANSWER BY FRIDAY. POTTSVILLE POLICE ARE KEEPING MUM ABOUT THE INVESTIGATION.(WGRC)


CHARTER SCHOOL FACING ISSUES

WITH THE ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE CHARTER SCHOOL COMING TO POTTSVILLE, ONE CITY OFFICIAL SAYS THE GILLINGHAM CHARTER SCHOOL MEETINGS SHOULD BE PUBLIC. A REP FOR THE SCHOOL SAYS THE MEETINGS WILL EVENTUALLY BE PUBLIC, BUT NOT UNTIL A BOARD OF TRUSTEES IS SELECTED. POTTSVILLE SUPERINTENDENT, JIM GALLAGHER, FEELS THAT THE CHARTER SCHOOL SHOULD OPERATE UNDER THE SAME RULES AS ANY OTHER PUBLIC SCHOOL. NICOLLE HUTCHINSON, PRESIDENT OF THE GILLINIGHAM CHARTER SCHOOL, SAYS THAT THE NEXT MEETING OF THE SCHOOL IS SCHEDULED FOR JUNE 16TH, BUT WILL NOT BE OPEN TO THE PUBLIC AND THAT THE SELECTION OF A BOARD OF TRUSTEES MAY BE ON THE AGENDA.

NESTOR FILES APPEAL

FORMER SHENANDOAH POLICE CHIEF MATTHEW NESTOR HAS FILED AN APPEAL FOR HIS CONVICTION OF FILING A FALSE REPORT AND OBSTRUCTING AN INVESTIGATION OF THE FATAL BEATING OF AN ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT IN JULY 2008. NESTER HAS ASKED THE 3RD CIRCUIT COURT OF APPEALS OVERTURN HIS CONVICTION AND SENTENCE OF 13 MONTHS IN FEDERAL PRISON. THE NOTICE WAS FILED BY JIM WEST OF HARRISBURG, ONE OF NESTOR'S ATTORNEYS. NESTOR WAS SENTENCED BACK ON JUNE 1ST AND IS SCHEDULED TO REPORT TO PRISON ON JUNE 29TH .

PINE GROVE MAN ENTERS PLEA ON DRUG CHARGES

A PINE GROVE MAN ENTERED A PLEA TO POSSESSING MARIJUANA AND DRUG PARAPHERNALIA INSTEAD OF GOING TO TRIAL WEDNESDAY IN SCHUYLKILL COUNTY COURT. IN RETURN, PROSECUTORS DROPPED SEVEN ANIMAL CRUELTY CHARGES AGAINST 40-YEAR-OLD ANDY OXENRIDER. THE REPUBLICAN HERALD REPORTS, OXENRIDER IS CURRENTLY SERVING A STATE PRISON SENTENCE FOR VIOLATING HIS PROBATION AND PAROLE ON SIMILAR CHARGES, BUT MIGHT NOT HAVE TO SPEND MORE TIME BEHIND BARS AS HE PLEADED NO CONTEST TO THE DRUG CHARGES.

CONGRESSMAN ANNOUNCES GRANTS FOR DEVELOPMENT

CONGRESSMAN TIM HOLDEN HAS ANNOUNCED 3 AREA BOROUGHS WILL RECEIVE RURAL DEVELOPMENT GRANTS FROM THE U-S DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE. NEW PHILADELPHIA, GILBERTON AND BLYTHE TOWNSHIP WILL RECEIVE OVER 92 THOUSAND DOLLARS COMBINED TO PURCHASE NEW DUMP TRUCKS THAT ARE EQUIPPED WITH PLOWS AND SPREADERS. THE VEHICLES WILL PROVIDE SAFE AND RELIABLE TRANSPORTATION DURING SNOWY WEATHER AS WELL AS FOR ROUTINE PROJECTS AND REPAIR PROJECTS. THEY WILL REPLACE THE CURRENT 10 YEAR OLD VEHICLES. U-S-D-A RURAL DEVELOPMENT AIMS TO HELP IMPROVE THE ECONOMY AND QUALITY OF LIFE IN RURAL AMERICA.

WASHINGTON (AP) - ALLYSON SCHWARTZ IS THE FIRST DEMOCRATIC MEMBER OF CONGRESS TO CALL ON NEW YORK CONGRESSMAN ANTHONY WEINER TO RESIGN FOR SENDING A LEWD PHOTO OF HIMSELF TO A WOMAN VIA TWITTER. LANSDALE, PA. (AP) - AUTHORITIES SAY A POLICE OFFICER SHOT AND KILLED HIS 17-YEAR-OLD SON AFTER THE YOUTH REPORTEDLY ATTACKED HIM WITH A HUNTING KNIFE INSIDE THEIR HOME. INVESTIGATORS SAY HATFIELD LIEUTENANT ERIC SCHMITZ WAS TREATED FOR INJURIES SUSTAINED IN THE VIOLENCE YESTERDAY AFTERNOON AT HIS HOME IN THE TOWNSHIP.

KABUL, AFGHANISTAN (AP) - OFFICIALS ARE INVESTIGATING AN ATTACK ON A WEDDING PARTY IN EASTERN AFGHANISTAN THAT KILLED NINE PEOPLE. NO ONE IMMEDIATELY CLAIMED RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE ATTACK.
