TWO VEHICLE CRASH

NO ONE WAS INJURED IN A TWO VEHICLE CRASH WEDNESDAY IN WAYNE TOWNSHIP. 56 YEAR OLD JOAN BENDER OF AUBURN WAS STOPPED AT THE EXIT OF LAKE WYNONAH, ATTEMPTING TO TURN ONTO ROUTE 183. HER CAR STRUCK THE PICKUP OF 60 YEAR OLD EDWARD LEHR OF PINE GROVE. BOTH VEHICLES HAD SEVERE DAMAGE. THE CRASH HAPPENED AFTER 11 WEDNESDAY MORNING.

WATER GRANTS

NEARLY $3 MILLION DOLLARS IN H-2-0 GRANTS FOR CRITICAL WATER AND SEWER PROJECTS IN THE COUNTY ACCORDING TO STATE SENATOR DAVE ARGALL AND REPRESENTATIVE NEAL GOODMAN. MONIES COME FROM THE COMMONWEALTH FINANCING AUTHORITY. AMONG THE LOCAL PROJECTS INCLUDED WERE THE DELANO TOWNSHIP SANITARY SEWER PROJECT, THE FRACKVILLE MANAGEMENT UPGRADE PROJECT AND THE WAYNE SANITARY SEWER PROJECT.

DEP CLEARS DANGER OF AMMONIA

STATE ENVIRONMENTAL OFFICIALS WERE IN POTTSVILLE YESTERDAY AT THE SITE OF AN AMMONIA LEAK, AND THEY REPORT NO DANGEROUS LEVELS OF THE COLORLESS GAS AT THE FORMER POTTSVILLE ICE PLANT. 56 YEAR OLD JOSEPH MINCHOFF OF CUMBOLA WAS WORKING AT THE SITE ON EAST RAILROAD STREET WHEN HE CUT A PIPE FILLED WITH AMMONIA GAS AND WAS BURNED. HE REMAINS IN LEHIGH VALLEY HOSPITAL IN CRITICAL CONDITION. THE SITE WAS BOARDED UP FOLLOWING THE ACCIDENT TUESDAY.

ON WEDNESDAY THE STATE RELEASED NEARLY $23 MILLION IN NEW GRANTS AND LOANS FOR COMPANIES THROUGHOUT THE STATE THAT ARE EMBRACING THE RENEWABLE ENERGY INDUSTRY. THE GRANTS AND LOANS THAT WERE APPROVED ARE FUNDED BY THE SOLAR ENERGY PROGRAM, A KEY COMPONENT OF THE $650 MILLION ALTERNATIVE ENERGY INVESTMENT FUND THAT GOVERNOR RENDELL SIGNED INTO LAW IN JULY. PITTSBURGH POLICE CHARGE HOMELESS MAN IN RAPE

HE IS ALSO CHARGED IN THREE BURGLARIES THAT TOOK PLACE BETWEEN JULY 5 AND WEDNESDAY.

RENDELL SAYS HE'D WANT TO APPEAL FUMO'S SENTENCE IF HE WERE PROSECUTING
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - PENNSYLVANIA GOV. ED RENDELL IS AMONG THE MANY PEOPLE WHO WROTE TO A JUDGE SEEKING A LENIENT SENTENCE FOR A FORMER STATE SENATOR CONVICTED OF 137 COUNTS IN A CORRUPTION CASE. RENDELL IS A FORMER PROSECUTOR. HE SAYS IF HE HAS BEEN THE PROSECUTOR IN VINCENT FUMO'S CASE, HE WOULD WANT TO APPEAL THE SENTENCE OF FOUR YEARS AND SEVEN MONTHS. HARRISBURG, PA. (AP) - THE PENNSYLVANIA HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES IS CLOSER TO DEBATE ON A STATE BUDGET BILL AFTER DECIDING TO SUSPEND AN INTERNAL RULE THAT REQUIRED A TWO-WEEK WAITING PERIOD. THE SURPRISE RULES VOTE YESTERDAY PASSED WITH ONLY THREE MEMBERS DISSENTING. IT CLEARS THE WAY FOR A DEBATE TODAY ON AMENDMENTS, AND POTENTIAL PASSAGE ON FRIDAY. PHILADELPHIA (AP) - NINETY PEOPLE WHO PLAN TO START TEACHING IN PHILADELPHIA PUBLIC SCHOOLS FOR THE FIRST TIME THIS SEPTEMBER ARE TO FINISH A SEVEN-DAY TRAINING COURSE THURSDAY. THE "STRONG BEGINNINGS" COURSE IS DESIGNED TO CUT DOWN ON THE NUMBER OF TEACHERS WHO QUIT IN THE FIRST FEW YEARS.
