Weatherwise, it certainly didn’t seem like December 1st. Friday was a wild weather day, to say the least. Unseasonably high temps gave way to severe thunderstorms across Schuylkill County late yesterday, and may have spawned tornadoes in Dauphin and Luzerne counties. Trees were knocked down, and power and phone outages resulted from the storms. WPPA News was in contact with Schuylkill Emergency Management officials early this morning, and they tell us that Commonwealth Telephone is working to restore phone service in Tower City and Porter Township. Emergency calls should be forwarded to 717-647-2271. PPL reported significant power outages to the west and north of Schuylkill County. Service is expected to be restored to all areas by later today.

A national investment firm with local presence has received a prestigious honor. The financial services firm Edward Jones has been named the Number 1 large company on the “Best Places to Work in Pennsylvania” ranking, according to the Central Penn Business Journal. Fifteen companies were named “Best Places to Work”, divided into medium and large company categories based on the number of employees. Edward Jones operates 155 one-broker offices in the state. The ranking was based on an employer inventory of practices and an anonymous survey of employees. The company is headquartered in St. Louis, Missouri, and has a local office in Schuylkill Haven.
