STATE POLICE AT HAMBURG TELL US BERKS COUNTY SHERIFF'S DEPUTY KYLE PAGERLY WAS PRONOUNCED DEAD AT LEHIGH VALLEY HOSPITAL AFTER BEING SHOT WEDNESDAY NIGHT WHILE TRYING TO SERVE A WARRANT ON 25-YEAR-OLD MATTHEW CONNOR. INVESTIGATORS SAY PAGERLY WAS PART OF A FUGITIVE TASK FORCE TRYING TO SERVE A WARRANT ON CONNOR FOR BURGLARY AND WEAPONS CHARGES WHEN CONNOR FLED FROM HIS GIRLFRIEND'S HOME IN ALBANY TOWNSHIP. STATE POLICE SAY THEY PURSUED CONNOR INTO THE WOODS BEHIND THE HOME. A SHOOTOUT ERUPTED AFTER POLICE SAY CONNOR REFUSED TO DROP AN AK-47 ASSAULT RIFLE. CONNOR WAS PRONOUNCED DEAD AT THE SCENE.

PENNSYLVANIA HOUSE PASSES ON-TIME $27.15 BILLION BUDGET WITH REDUCED STATE SPENDING AND NO NEW TAXES

MANAGER ACCUSED OF STEALING FROM LIQUOR STORE

THE MANAGER OF THE SCHUYLKILL HAVEN LIQUOR STORE IS ACCUSED OF STEALING OVER 75 HUNDRED DOLLARS FROM THE STORE. 44 YEAR OLD LINDA MULLIN HAS BEEN CHARGED WITH UNLAWFUL TAKING AND TAMPERING WITH PHYSICAL RECORDS. SCHUYLKILL HAVEN POLICE REPORT THAT MULLIN WAS IDENTIFIED AFTER RECEIVING A CALL FROM AN INVESTIGATOR WITH THE PA LIQUOR CONTROL BOARD WHO SAID AN AUDIT REVEALED DISCREPANCIES WITH DEPOSITS THAT WERE NOT MADE. MULLINS IS SCHEDULED FOR A HEARING ON JULY 19.

THE FORCE OF THE BLAST KNOCKED OUT A PART OF THE STONE WALL AT THE CHURCH. SEVERAL OF THE PEOPLE WHO SURVIVED AND PROVIDED VALUABLE AID AT THE SCENE THAT DAY WILL ALSO BE HONORED AT THE 6:30PM SERVICE THIS EVENING. A MEMORIAL GARDEN, HONORING THE LATE JUDGE E.MAC TROUTMAN AND HIS WIFE PEGGY WILL ALSO BE DEDICATED. THOSE PLANNING ON ATTENDING THE DEDICATION SHOULD BRING THEIR LAWN CHAIRS.

STATE POLICE STATION WELCOMES NEW COMMANDER

WILDONER, WHO WAS CHARGED WITH STEALING OVER $170 THOUSAND DOLLARS FROM THE MAHANOY AREA SCHOOL DISTRICT, WAS TOWNSHIP TAX RECEIVER FOR 35 YEARS. HIS UNEXPIRED TERM WILL BE FILLED BY JOHN KOWALCHICK. NEITHER STATE POLICE AT SCHUYLKILL HAVEN NOR SUPERINTENDENT JOIE GREEN WOULD COMMENT DUE TO THE ONGOING INVESTIGATION.

JUDGE WILLIAM BALDWIN FELT THAT PROSECUTORS DISPLAYED ENOUGH EVIDENCE TO SHOW SNYDER VIOLATED HIS PAROLE.

SECOND PIT BULL ATTACK IN TWO DAYS IN CITY

A SECOND PIT BULL ATTACK HAS BEEN REPORTED IN THE CITY OF POTTSVILLE. ACCORDING TO THE REPUBLICAN AND HERALD, CITY POLICE WERE SUMMONED TO THE 500 BLOCK OF EAST MARKET STREET FOR A REPORT OF TWO PIT BULLS FIGHTING. THE DOGS OWNER, A 16-YEAR-OLD ARRIVED AT THE SCENE TO SECURE THEM AND FOUND OUT THAT HIS 8-YEAR-OLD BROTHER ATTEMPTED TO STOP THE DOGS HOWEVER HE WAS BITTEN MULTIPLE TIMES ON HIS RIGHT ARM. ACCORDING TO RESIDENTS IN THE AREA THIS IS NOT THE FIRST SPAT BETWEEN THE TWO ANIMALS. POTTSVILLE POLICE HAVE TURNED OVER THE INVESTIGATION TO CITY HEALTH AND ANIMAL CONTROL OFFICER FRANK SPLEEN.

PINE GROVE MAN FOUND TO BE DISORDERLY

STATE POLICE AT JONESTOWN ARRESTED ZACHARY ANSPACH AFTER MIDNIGHT THURSDAY ON CHARGES OF DISORDERLY CONDUCT. ACCORDING TO TROOPERS ANSPACH CREATED A DISTURBANCE AT THE HESS EXPRESS IN UNION TOWNSHIP AND THEN DECIDED TO WALK DOWN THE MIDDLE OF ROUTE 72, KNOWN AS LICKDALE ROAD. ANSPACH WILL HAVE TO APPEAR BEFORE MAGISTERIAL DISTRICT JUDGE MICHAEL SMITH OF CLEONA.

TWO HURT IN CITY CRASH

POTTSVILLE POLICE ARE INVESTIGATING AN ACCIDENT THAT OCCURRED SHORTLY AFTER 2 AM THURSDAY IN THE 1900 BLOCK OF MAHANTONGO STREET. TYLER CHANEY LOST CONTROL OF HIS JEEP, STRUCK TWO VEHICLES AND THEN RAN THROUGH AN IRON FENCE PROCEEDING THROUGH A YARD BEFORE EVENTUALLY STOPPING AFTER HITTING A CONCRETE WALL. A PIECE OF THE FENCE PIERCED THE DRIVER’S DOOR AND WAS LODGED IN CHANEY’S LEG. HE WAS TAKEN TO SCHUYLKILL MEDICAL CENTER SOUTH JACKSON FOR TREATMENT. HIS PASSENGER, KRISTOPHER STONEHAM SUFFERED MINOR INJURIES AND WAS TREATED AT THE SCENE.

WEST MAHANOY TOWNSHIP POLICE ARE SEEKING INFORMATION ABOUT A THEFT AT THE TASTEE FREEZE ON RINGTOWN BOULEVARD. ACCORDING TO POLICE SOMEONE FORCED OPEN A FRONT WINDOW BETWEEN 10:15 PM WEDNESDAY AND 10:30 AM THURSDAY. ONCE INSIDE REMOVED AN UNDETERMINED AMOUNT OF CASH. ANYONE WITH INFORMATION IS ASKED TO CALL POLICE AT 462-2360.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The prosecution has rested in the trial of a
man charged with killing three Pittsburgh police officers.
Yesterday, at least two law enforcement officers testified that
suspect Richard Poplawski confessed to the shootings. The defense
is expected to present its case beginning this morning.

SHIREMANSTOWN, Pa. (AP) - Children at a central Pennsylvania day
care center are being relocated after wildlife officials found a
colony of bats in the building. Staff at The Children's Garden in
Shiremanstown evacuated about 180 kids this week after finding one
bat in a classroom and another in a hallway. No one was bitten.

ALLENTOWN, Pa. (AP) - Federal environmental officials say that
testing has revealed contamination in three private water wells
located near an April blowout at a Pennsylvania natural gas
drilling site. An Environmental Protection Agency spokesman says
the EPA took water samples from seven private water wells near the
Chesapeake Energy drilling site near Canton in northeastern
Pennsylvania's Bradford County.

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Some test pilots came a long way for
Pittsburgh's famous Primanti Brothers sandwiches. The Pittsburgh
Tribune-Review reports the crew manning a new $300 million 747-8

MINOT, N.D. (AP) - More rain is forecast in Minot, N.D. today,
possibly worsening a record-setting flood that already has damaged
thousands of homes. Officials estimate the surging Souris river
already has swamped at least 2,500 homes, and the number is
expected to be much higher by the time the river crests today. More
than a quarter of the city's 40,000 residents have been evacuated.

BEIJING (AP) - Prosecutors in China's commercial hub of Shanghai
have charged 26 people with bribery and other crimes related to an
apartment-building fire that killed 58 people last year. Officials
say welders caused the fire by ignoring safety precautions.
Building fires are common in China because of lax safety codes and
unsafe construction work.

TAX COLLECTOR CHARGED WITH STEALING FROM DISTRICT
STATE POLICE AT SCHUYLKILL HAVEN HAVE CHARGED 71 YEAR OLD WILLIAM WILDONER OF BARNESVILLE WITH STEALING OVER 170 THOUSAND DOLLARS OWED TO THE MAHANOY AREA SCHOOL DISTRICT. AUTHORITIES SAY THAT WILDONER BEGAN TAKING TAX PROCEEDS THAT HE COLLECTED FOR THE SCHOOL DISTRICT AND USING THAT MONEY FOR HIS OWN BENEFIT. CAUSING A SHORTFALL THAT WAS NEVER REPORTED TO THE SCHUYLKILL COUNTY TAX CLAIM BUREAU. WILDONER THEN USED 2010 TAX PROCEEDS TO MAKE UP FOR THE SHORTFALL. THE INVESTIGATION CONTINUES AND ADDITIONAL CHARGES MAY BE FILED.

FAMILY DOG ATTACKS CHILDREN

THREE CHILDREN WERE ATTACKED BY THEIR FAMILY DOG WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON, SENDING TWO TO LOCAL HOSPITALS WHILE A THIRD WAS FLOWN TO LEHIGH VALLEY HOSPITAL. POTTSVILLE POLICE TELL US THE OWNERS OF THE PIT BULL, JUSTIN AND NICOLE EADDY, WERE NOT HOME AT THE TIME OF ATTACK. THE OLDEST CHILD, A 13-YEAR-OLD GIRL, WAS FOUND LYING ON THE SIDEWALK WITH SERIOUS INJURIES WHEN POLICE ARRIVED. TWO OTHER CHILDREN, BOTH UNDER THE AGE OF 10, SUFFERED LESS SEVERE WOUNDS. OFFICERS WERE FORCED TO PUT THE DOG DOWN AFTER IT CONTINUED TO ACT EXTREMELY AGGRESSIVE.

MCADOO MAN SENTENCED TO 20 YEARS FOR ASSAULT ON GIRLS

A SELINSGROVE MAN WAS SENTENCED ON WEDNESDAY TO SPEND AT LEAST 20 YEARS FOR THE RAPE OF A CHILD AND INDECENT ASSAULT. MCADOO POLICE ARRESTED DAVID MILLER JR. IN JUNE OF LAST YEAR AFTER RECEIVING A PHONE CALL OF AN ALLEGED RAPE. POLICE REPORTS SAY THAT ONE OF THE VICTIMS REPRTED THAT WHILE MILLER WAS BABYSITTING HER AND ANOTHER GIRL MILLER WOULD ENGAGE IN DEVIANT SEXUAL BEHAVIOR WITH THEM, TO INCLUDE RAPE. DAVID MILLER’S SENTENCE WILL RUN CONSECUTIVELY WITH ANOTHER SIX TO 20 YEAR SENTENCE HE WILL SERVE FOR A SIMILAR INCIDENT IN SNYDER COUNTY.

REPRESENTATIVE JERRY KNOWLES SAID HE WAS PLEASED TO VOTE FOR THIS BILL AS HE SERVED AS A VOLUNTEER FIREFIGHTER FOR MORE THAN 30 YEARS. UNDER THE BILL, FIREFIGHTERS WHO CAN ESTABLISH A WORK RELATED EXPOSURE TO A GROUP 1 CARCINOGEN AS IDENTIFIED BY THE INTERNATIONAL AGENCY FOR RESEARCH ON CANCER WOULD BE COVERED. EIGHT PEOPLE ARE NOW HOMELESS AFTER A FIRE BROKE OUT IN MINERSVILLE JUST AFTER 2AM MONDAY. FIREFIGHTERS WERE CALLED TO DELAWARE AVE. WHERE FOUR HOMES WERE ENGULFED IN FLAMES. THE BLAZE IS BELIEVED TO HAVE STARTED IN AN UNOCCUPIED HOME, BUT THE CAUSE IS UNKNOWN AT THIS TIME.

FOUR TEENAGERS ASSAULTED WITH TRUCK

FOUR TEENAGERS WERE INJURED EARLY SATURDAY MORNING IN BLYTHE TOWNSHIP AFTER A MAN HIT THEM WITH HIS TRUCK. FRACKVILLE POLICE TELL US 38-YEAR-OLD GEORGE KLIPOLA OF MIDDLEPORT DROVE HIS PICK UP TRUCK INTO A GROUP OF TEENAGE BOYS AFTER BEING INVOLVED IN A FIGHT. TWO OF THE BOYS HAD TO BE TAKEN TO LEHIGH VALLEY HOSPITAL AFTER BEING PULLED UNDER THE TRUCK AND RAN OVER. THE OTHER TWO ALSO SUFFERED MODERATE INJURIES. KLIPOLA WAS TAKEN TO COUNTY PRISON ON $75,000 STRAIGHT CASH BAIL.

MAN FLOWN TO HOSPITAL AFTER CRASH IN BUTLER TOWNSHIP

A NEW YORK MAN WAS FLOWN TO GEISINGER MEDICAL CENTER MONDAY NIGHT AFTER FLIPPING HIS CAR SEVERAL TIMES ON I-81. FRACKVILLE POLICE TELL US THE DRIVER WAS SPEEDING WHEN HE LOST CONTROL OF HIS VEHICLE NEAR MILE MARKER 122. THE VEHICLE LANDED ON ITS ROOF, FORCING RESCUE TEAMS TO EXTRICATE HIM. THE DRIVER’S CONDITION IS UNKNOWN AT THIS TIME.

HAVEN REVITALIZATION

SCHUYLKILL HAVEN HELD IT'S QUARTERLY MAYOR'S MEETING MONDAY NIGHT. SUGGESTIONS WERE TAKEN ON THE PROPOSED WALKING LOOP THAT WILL ADD TO COMMUNITY AND ECONOMIC REVITALIZATION. THE SCHUYLKILL HAVEN HERITAGE ACTION PLAN COMMITTEE IS TO REVITALIZE THE BOROUGH BY PROMOTING TOURISM. THE PLAN IS TO BUILD A TRAIL THAT WILL CONNECT POTTSVILLE TO PHILADELPHIA. SCHUYLKILL HAVEN RECEIVED A $2,000 GRANT TO HELP FUND THE PROJECT AND PARTS OF THE TRAIL HAVE ALREADY BEEN BUILT.


SCHUYLKILL HAVEN TO HAVE NEW FIELD

A NEW MULTI-PURPOSE FIELD IS PLANNED TO BE READY BY NEXT SPRING IN SCHUYLKILL HAVEN. OVER $62,000 HAVE BEEN DONATED TO THE BOROUGH FOR THE FIELD THAT WOULD BE USED FOR SOFTBALL OR TEE-BALL. THE EXACT COST OF THE FIELD IS UNKNOWN BUT BOROUGH COUNCIL MEMBERS SAY CONSTRUCTION COULD BEGIN ON THE NEW FIELD BY AUGUST. THE NEW FIELD WILL REPLACE THE ONE PRESENTLY IN THE BOROUGH WHERE COUNCIL MEMBERS SAY IS DETERIORATED AND SHOULD BE REPLACED.


WILLIAMS VALLEY APPROVES NEW SUPERINTENDENT

THE WILLIAMS VALLEY SCHOOL BOARD HAS APPROVED A FIVE YEAR CONTRACT FOR A NEW SUPERINTENDENT. DONALD BURKHARDT OF COAL TOWNSHIP WILL EFFECTIVELY TAKE THE OFFICE ON JULY 1, HE REPLACES OUT GOING SUPERINTENDENT OLGA EHRHART WHO IS RETIRING AT THE END OF THE MONTH. THE SCHOOL BOARD ALSO APPROVED A NEW 130 THOUSAND DOLLAR TELEPHONE SYSTEM TO BE INSTALLED IN THE ELEMENTARY AND MIDDLE SCHOOLS. THE SYSTEM IS CURRENTLY WAITING APPROVAL FROM SOLICITOR RICHARD THORNBURG TO JOIN THE NATIONAL JOINT POWERS ALLIANCE

CONSTRUCTION BEGINS ON RT 309

CONTRACTORS ARE PREPARING FOR THE OVERHAUL OF RT 309 IN TAMAQUA. THE TRAFFIC MITIGATION AND SAFETY PROJECT WILL BEGIN THIS WEEK AND LAST UNTIL DECEMBER. THE PROJECT WILL INCLUDE UPGRADES TO TRAFFIC SIGNALS, EMERGENCY SIGNAL PRE-EMPTION DEVICES AND PEDESTRIAN SIGNALS. PENNDOT SAYS MOST OF THE PROJECT WILL NOT AFFECT TRAFFIC FLOW.

FIRE CREWS WERE CALLED OUT EARLY THIS MORNING TO BATTLE A BLAZE IN MINERSVILLE.THE FIRE WAS REPORTED JUST AFTER TWO THIS MORNING AT 233 SOUTH DELAWARE AVENUE AND SOON WENT TO TWO ALARMS.SCHUYLKILL COUNTY 9-1-1 REPORTS THAT FOUR HOMES ARE INVOLVED IN THAT FIRE. THERE HAVE BEEN NO INJURIES REPORTED. THREE PEOPLE ARE WITHOUT A PLACE TO STAY DUE TO THAT FIRE. A STATE POLICE FIRE MARSHAL IS INVESTIGATING. FOUR MOTORCYCLISTS INJURED IN CRASH

FOUR MOTORCYCLISTS WERE INJURED SATURDAY MORNING WHEN THEY LOST CONTROL OF THEIR MOTORCYCLES IN TILDEN TOWNSHIP. AMONG THOSE MEN WAS 29-YEAR-OLD CHAD DANEHOWER OF ORWIGSBURG. HAMBURG POLICE TELL US, ALL SUFFERED SEVERE ABRASIONS AND WERE TAKEN TO VARIOUS HOSPITALS. ALL WERE WEARING HELMETS.

BAGHDAD (AP) - THERE ARE CONFLICTING REPORTS ABOUT WHETHER AN ATTACK ON AN IRAQI GOVERNMENT COMPOUND THAT KILLED EIGHT PEOPLE IS UNDER CONTROL. AN IRAQI ARMY OFFICIAL SAYS THE ASSAILANTS SET OFF TWO CAR BOMBS OUTSIDE THE COMPOUND IN BAQOUBA 3MILES NORTHEAST OF BAGHDAD. GUNMEN THEN STORMED THE BUILDING AND TOOK HOSTAGES. IT'S NOT KNOWN IF ATTACKERS ARE AMONG THE DEAD.

HAMBURG, IOWA (AP) - AN EFFORT TO BOLSTER A SECONDARY LEVEE IS TRYING TO BEAT THE CLOCK, AND FLOODWATERS HEADING FOR A SMALL IOWA TOWN. HAMBURG COULD FIND ITSELF UNDER 10 FEET OF WATER IF THE SECOND LEVEE FAILS. CREWS ARE TRYING TO RAISE IT THREE FEET AFTER A MAIN LEVEE BROKE.

NORTHERN SCHUYLKILL RELAY FOR LIFE

MAHANOY AREA ALUMNI FIELD WAS BUSY THIS WEEKEND HOSTING THE 7TH ANNUAL RELAY FOR LIFE. BRAVING THE ELEMENTS TO INCLUDE SUN, RAIN, LIGHTNING AND HUMIDITY, THE AREA TEAMS FORMED OF CITY SHIRT TAILS, MA BEARS AND FRIENDS AND TRINITY MISSION DOVES OF LOVE WERE ABLE TO RAISE OVER 44 THOUSAND DOLLARS FOR THE SCHUYLKILL UNIT OF THE AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY.


REBATE PROGRAM TARGETS PROPERTY TAXES FOR SENIOR CITIZENS

OVER 120,000 SENIOR CITIZENS WHO LIVE IN THEIR OWN HOMES WILL HAVE THEIR ENTIRE SCHOOL PROPERTY TAX BILL ELIMINATED THIS SUMMER. THE REPUBLICAN HERALD REPORTS, SENIOR CITIZENS ARE ELIGIBLE FOR TAX RELIEF FROM TWO SOURCES, THE GENERAL SLOTS REVENUE EARMARKED FOR PROPERTY OWNERS AND THE SENIOR-ORIENTED PROPERTY TAX AND RENT REBATE PROGRAM. THE REBATE PROGRAM STARTED WHEN THE PENNSYLVANIA LOTTERY WAS CREATED TO PAY FOR A VARIETY OF SENIOR CITIZEN BENEFITS.

ATLANTA (AP) — EDYTHE SCOTT BAGLEY, THE OLDER SISTER OF CORETTA SCOTT KING, HAS DIED AT AGE 86. MARTIN LUTHER KING III SAYS IN A STATEMENT THAT BAGLEY DIED SATURDAY AT HER HOME IN CHENEY, PENNSYLVANIA. BAGLEY WAS A RETIRED PROFESSOR OF THEATRE ARTS AT CHEYNEY UNIVERSITY. HER FUNERAL IS FRIDAY IN WEST CHESTER.
